    Calvin Johnson

First of all, this is my first post so yea. Second of all I have a problem. Me and my three closest friends started our own 4 team league on ESPN and we're very competitive people. I have long been a Calvin Johnson fan, as I am a fan of GT, but I am really worried right now. See I picked him pretty early by most standards, but I think his rookie hype got to me. ESPN showed a graphic last week that showed that Jerry Rice and Michael Irving both failed to get more than 200 recieving yards in their rookie season. I also know Calvin is different; but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that Roy Williams will be the #1 and there is a whole 'nother can o' worms in how Kitna will perform. So my question to those of you helpful and all-knowing football souls out there is: Do I sacrifice the potentially great for the consistancy? I am almost certain I can get the least knowledgeable friend to trade for Reggie Wayne. Another team and I could get Roy Williams, or for sure Bernard Berrian, and the other kid is pretty smart. However Calvin has that aura that can lure even the smartest into a trap. He has Steve Smith, TO, Houshmanzada (did I spell that right?) and Lee Evans. He currently has Lee Evans on the bench and I know I could get on of those guys. So what do I do?

    Re: Calvin Johnson

Ah, the curse of the rookie WR... all that promise but none of the production.  Johnson, no matter the hype, isn't going to make a major impact this year.  WR's don't typically hit their stride until year 3.  Johnson might be the best rookie WR in history, but that still doesn't justify believing that he'll be a top WR.

Remember, draft with your head, not with your heart.  Even if you are a GT fan, that should have no bearing on who you take in a draft.  I'm a huge Steelers fan, but I don't have a single one of their players on my team.  If you are in a keeper league, it's a different story because of all the potential that Johnson offers, but otherwise, he's only going to disappoint this year.  Get what you can for him and wipe your brow, content in the knowledge that you didn't suffer all season with a rookie WR.
