Giants News and Notes 12/05/07

The Giants have a lot of injuries to worry about this week, and are hoping to get some players back for their trip to Philadelphia. Here's the news on Big Blue:

- The Giants have worked out 37 year-old Safety Robert Griffith, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. With the injuries in the secondary, it wouldn't hurt to look at this point.

- Big Blue has signed RB Danny Ware off of the Jets practice squad.

- Tom Coughlin expects running back Brandon Jacobs to start this Sunday for the Giants in Philadelphia.

- James Butler (hamstring) is expected to be able to go this Sunday.

- There is a good chance WR Steve Smith will be able to go this week, and the Giants expect him to be able to practice this week.

- According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the Giants will place RB Derrick Ward on I.R with a broken fibula.

Not much on Aaron Ross or Gibril Wilson yet guys, but we should hear something about the status of those two tomorrow.

Lets hope we can secure the wild card over the next 2 weeks and try to focus getting some of  these guys healthy for the wild card. The Seahawks and Bucks are beatable teams and a couple of rested players could be all the G men need. I  think it was said before but it would also be a good opportunity to see the younger guys play and really gague the depth of some positions. Hell, maybey Plax could even get some practice in.

Rick, I think we could handle the Bucs but the Seahawka would beat us handily given their passing game. If Garcia plays for the Bucs, it would be a tough game too.

The Seahawks have not been as good this season, but your right, both games would be hard to win. How is that decided?

Man this team seems to be ravaged with injuries at the wrong time  of the season again. I know all teams go through the same situations but it really shows the lack of depth in certain positions. I guess it could be worse though, if Eli or one of the starting OL, DL were out it would be much worse.

Rick, it is decided by seeding. the best we can do is #1 wildcard, or the #5 overall, meaning we'd play the #4 division winner. TB and Seattle are tied right now I think...

Is anyone else having any "time zone" issues?

I have this set on Eastern time, but unless you change your individual profile, it's automatically set on GMT time (I believe).

The injuries to Wilson and Ross could easily be exposed this week if McNabb is healthy and efficient.

Once again it will be up to the D-Line to get a lot of pressure.  I think if Robbins and Tuck can provide the same middle pressure they did against the Bears, the D will be allright.

As for the O, the recipe is obvious:  run effectively, minimize the aerial mistakes.  If Smith is a go that will be fun to watch.  As always I would like to see them involve Boss and Bradshaw more.  Philly has a great secondary so downfield stuff will be difficult.

I re-watched the game last night on NFL Replay.  I didn't count the number of plays Tuck got, but whatever they were they should be doubled this week.  He is getting more dominant by the week.  I was surprised in the second viewing to see that Reggie Torbor made a couple of very nice, athletic plays in coverage.  In addition, Mitchell not only made the big play we all saw, but was around alot of other plays like the Tuck sack.  Butler also played surprisingly well.

What is the glaring weakness of the secondary is their inability to turn their hips and run with receivers deep.  The Eagles' Curtis really scares me as a result.

Acura - Glad to have you here!

Just click your name, go to "avatar," browse, etc..  Once you've found the picture you want to use, click upload (I think?) then save.  It may take a minute or two for it to appear.

I liked the old pop-out comment page from the old MVN site.  But I like the writers here more, so I guess I can deal with it.

I remember the name Robert Griffith, but I don't really know much about thw guy.  I'm hoping he's better in coverage than our current safeties, but I wonder how much playing time he'll actually receive.  I like Michael Johnson, he's a great tackler, but he's definitely a weakness in coverage.

That would be great if Steve Smith is healthy enough to play. Moss has really done nothing with the shot that was given to him.

Wow, MVN keeps deleting all my comments over there.  Highly professional they are!

Can some please let Frank know the commenting issue has been fixed and that he's not blacklisted?  Brandon won't allow me to inform him.

Thanks, guys.  I am glad to see you all over here!

Levito - I'm surprised you liked the pop-up window.  Most people didn't like that.

Acura - No way to change the display name sadly.  You may have to create a new account.  The whole display/user name thing is confusing, even to me!  That's why I always tell everyone to use the same for both.

I don't know if the pop-up commenting is an option, but if people really like it, I'll most certainly look into it.

Guys, if you have questions, comments or suggestions (display names excluded), don't hesitate to shout out!  I want to make this site as enjoyable as possible for you.

I will put myself out on a long limb and state that over the next five weeks we will see that Steve Smith was one of the steals of the 2007 draft. Provided he is healthy I believe he will create some real matchup problems for defenses, and while he will make some typical rookie mistakes, we'll all see that he has what it takes to be a top NFL receiver: ability to separate; great hands; toughness; and football instincts. I am really looking forward to how much of a difference he will make in the offense. I think it could be quite a lot. Maybe not this week. Maybe not even next. But soon.

fanfor55years - That is my dream.  It's so hard to watch our current passing offense.  Nothing would make me happier than for Smith to spark our offense again and have both offense and defense running on all cylinders going into the playoffs...

Personally, I thin would would rather see Robert Griffith out there than Craig Dahl.  I think the only way Griffith would play is if Johnson or Butler goes down and he is way better than Dahl.  37 or not...

It would definitely be nice to have a receiver back that Eli really seemed to build a quick chemistry with in the pre-season.  Anything to open up the passing game would be a big help.  It would probably be smart to spread the offense a little to force Philly to bring in nickle packages, and to neutralize their pass rush with some quick routes.  Hopefullg that'll open up some some for Jacobs to bust a few big runs.

Hey guys, I have invited Frank over to the site a number of times...maybe he doesn't want to get attacked on two flanks.

How easy is it to create an icon? Are there some that are readily downloadable? Remember, I am computer-illiterate.

As far as Frank, people may slam him, but they respect him.  Frank has been a loyal reader of mine for years and I'd like to see him return.

I say we take a look at Mike Rumph who can play either safety or CB.  Some versatility would be nice right now. I would mind looking into Terrence Kiel or Bhawoh Jue either.  At least they have experience but aren't so old they can't run anymore (Griffith, Darius, Shaun Williams)...

FF55, Frank has tried a couple of times to get set up here and has found the same difficulty many of us initially had in accessing the comment section.  He's waiting for his son to help him.

FF55, I'd like your view as to whether the return of smith, assuming it occurs, will mean a shake-up in positioning at all.  In other words, do they simply slide him in for Moss at the number 3, or do they move either him or Amani to 1, the other to 2, and use Moss and Tyree as 3, giving Plax a much needed rest.

Danny Ware and Derrick Ward have a couple things in common.  Both are similar in stature, and both were signed off the Jets practice squad.  We can't find gold twice, can we?

Levito said:

Jim, the smart thing would be to either rest Plax and insert Smith at the #1 or move him around until favorable matchups are made.  But most likely the Giants will just replace Moss with Smith in the slot.

Wow, Steve Smith could be huge. I hope he's really good to go and we're not forcing him back too soon. My biggest fear seeing him return is watching him pull up on a route and grab for his hamstring. If both he and BJ can go on Sunday, it will raise my confidence level twofold.

And for the record, I don't respect Frank. I don't care how old he is, I've seen more maturity and better reasoning from my 12 year old sister. He guaranteed a blowout loss to the Bears and couldn't even man up to his mistakes. He never contributes anything but the most extreme of "glass half empty" perspectives. This site is better off without him.
