This week in Norton, it will be a tough week on a tough course with a tough field to compete against. Sleepers are starting to become few and far between as the entire field gets more and more familiar; just because someone's not a favorite doesn't necessarily make him a sleeper. So this week, we're going to have to dig deep, and look for those who match what this course demands: Decent Length, Very Good Accuracy, Very Good Iron Play and Very Good Putting. Are there busts in a qualify-only tournament like this one? Well, since a "bust" is almost exclusively determined by expectations, the answer to that question is yes. Sure, it's not like your run-of-the-mill tournaments where there are usually many to choose from; but the fact remains that golfers higher up on the Points List should be performing relative to their position on that list. If you were to script what a "playoff golf tournament" should be like; it would probably be very close to what we witnessed this weekend. Hopefully the Olympics didn't occupy all of your time, and you were able to see at least the final round on Sunday. When the round started, 20 golfers started within three shots of the lead. 18 golfers finished within three shots of the lead. It's the playoffs, and it's palpable. Steve Stricker leads the tournament playing as you'd expect from someone whose game fits this course perfectly. Kenny Perry made a big run on Friday to slide into a T-3rd; nice to see he decided to wake up. Hunter Mahan, the first-round leader, sits in second place by himself. We spent most of Start 'Em Sit 'Em yesterday talking about what the course was like, and what we should look for. It's an exclusionary distance course, which means the shortest hitters in the field are going to be unable to compete. Other than that, I don't see too many "make or break" stats this week. It's the Playoffs, and if you're not pumped for this, then you have no soul. I'm kidding, but the Playoffs are why we watch any sport, and even though it's just in its second year, and there's no Tiger; we're looking at the same thing. This year, The Barclays moves from it's traditional Westchester Country Club to Ridgewood in Paramus, NJ (kind of like the Jets and Giants). If you like scoring, this week was for you, as the PGA Tour Pros laid waste to this gold course that's been touched by Donald Ross. I shudder to think what the scores might have been if he hadn't. And although our winner was never really in doubt; at least he got a little push down the stretch to make things a little interesting. Interesting is probably the best way to describe the events happening at Sedgefield this week. So far, it's almost exclusively golfers who are from North Carolina, or at least have North Carolina ties who are in the top-10 of the tournament. This week, the week before the FedEx Cup Playoffs start; we find ourselves at an old-style course with a new-style twist, as Donald Ross has gotten his hands on it, and renovated it before the Greater Greensboro Open Wyndham Championship and the PGA returned there. 7,100 yards (approximately) isn't a very long course; so we can't exclude any of the shorter hitters like we can most weeks. Ok, first and foremost; to the PGA, screw you. This is the Greater Greensboro Open, and how dare you change the name. With that out of the way, I can now continue in peace. This course (Sedgefield) last hosted the GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN 31 years ago (Al Geiberger won). It's a Donald Ross course, but it only plays at just under 7,000 yards, making it one of those "non-exclusionary" courses that doesn't shut out the shorter hitters. It was an unusual week to say the least. Saturday's third round was completely rained out. Nobody got on the course at all. The PGA decided to go with playing both the third and fourth rounds on Sunday using threesomes. Right there, you could throw all conventional wisdom out the window; because there was nothing conventional as to what was happening. Oakland Hills is living up to everything it's cracked up to be. After two rounds, there is only one player under par (J.B.
