Sleepers are starting to become few and far between as the entire field gets more and more familiar; just because someone's not a favorite doesn't necessarily make him a sleeper. So this week, we're going to have to dig deep, and look for those who match what this course demands: Decent Length, Very Good Accuracy, Very Good Iron Play and Very Good Putting. Sounds easy enough, right? Well...(read more)

PGA Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: FedEx Cup Playoffs Round 2 - Deutche Bank Championship - TPC Boston - Norton, MA

You know, it figures. Well, since a "bust" is almost exclusively determined by expectations, the answer to that question is yes. Sure, it's not like your run-of-the-mill tournaments where there are usually many to choose from; but the fact remains that golfers higher up on the Points List should be performing relative to their position on that list. Steve Stricker leads the tournament playing as you'd expect from someone whose game fits this course perfectly. Kenny Perry made a big run on Friday to slide into a T-3rd; nice to see he decided to wake up. Hunter Mahan, the first-round leader, sits in second place by himself. But, the man making the biggest noise entered this tournament at 102nd on the FedEx Cup Points list. So far, it's almost exclusively golfers who are from North Carolina, or at least have North Carolina ties who are in the top-10 of the tournament. I didn't think that course knowledge would be as huge of a deal as it appears to be (it usually isn't); but then again, the fact that this course is new to the Greater Greensboro Open Wyndham Championship, at least, new for anyone who didn't play...(read more)

PGA Weekly Sleepers: Wyndham Championship - Sedgefield Country Club - Greensboro, NC

This week, the week before the FedEx Cup Playoffs start; we find ourselves at an old-style course with a new-style twist, as Donald Ross has gotten his hands on it, and renovated it before the Greater Greensboro Open Wyndham Championship and the PGA returned there. 7,100 yards (approximately) isn't a very long course; so we can't exclude any of the shorter hitters like we can most weeks. We need the usual suspects though; Accuracy, Greens and Putting, and I think especially Putting. This is the Greater Greensboro Open, and how dare you change the name. With that out of the way, I can now continue in peace. This course (Sedgefield) last hosted the GREATER GREENSBORO OPEN 31 years ago (Al Geiberger won). It's a Donald Ross course, but it only plays at just under 7,000 yards, making it one of those "non-exclusionary" courses that doesn't shut out the shorter hitters. But even though everyone had it tough this week, there were a select few that came up very small; some when it counted the most. My job is to rip these players, thus is the nature of this column. Two of these, I probably won't enjoy ripping very much. One I most likely will enjoy ripping very much, but that's not the point. Saturday's third round was completely rained out. Nobody got on the course at all. The PGA decided to go with playing both the third and fourth rounds on Sunday using threesomes. Right there, you could throw all conventional wisdom out the window; because there was nothing conventional as to what was happening. Some players dropped out of contention, while others used the compressed weekend to their advantage. In the end, however, it was the winner of...(read more)

PGA Who Is He: PGA Championship - Oakland Hills Country Club - Bloomfield Township, MI

Oakland Hills is living up to everything it's cracked up to be. After two rounds, there is only one player under par (J.B. Holmes (-1)), Kenny Perry withdrew, Phil Mickelson is in the hunt, and there's a Singh in the top-10 (more on that in a bit). This, potentially, could be every bit as difficult as the U.S. (and British for that matter) Open and we've seen nothing but unpredictable finishes to this point. It's the final major of the year, of course, and everyone in the field who...(read more)
