• PGA Start 'Em Sit 'Em: The Players Championship - TPC Sawgrass - Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

  This week brings us to one of our "almost" majors, and the TPC is year after year one of the most popular and most viewed events on Tour each year. Of course, Tiger's not going to grace us with his presence this year; therefore the "experts" are going to have to earn their money this week (Beware of PHIL picks that include "defending champ" as the main reason for the pick). I would think most readers are familiar with Sawgrass, or at least familiar with the Island... • PGA Top Tournament Performances: Wachovia Championship - Quail Hollow Country Club, Charlotte, NC

  It's no secret that I feel the CBS golf announcers are by far the best in the business. That said, I have to take issue with the constant pimping of the Quail Hollow course as a "U.S. Open Quality" course. When the winner of the championship wins with a score of 272 (-16), it is NOT "U.S. Open Quality". To make that course even near that quality, you'd have to grow the rough another couple inches, and not water the greens and fairways for about a year. And even then, it's... • PGA Top Tournament Performances: EDS Byron Nelson Championship - TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas- Irving, TX

  The course proved to be a big success this past week, and while it appears scores were going to drop through the floor early on; they ended up stabilizing, and it turned out to be a pretty competitive tournament as well as a pretty good test of golf for a non-major. Of course, ending the tournament with a playoff is always exciting, especially one that goes three holes in the sudden-death format. • PGA Weekly Sleepers: EDS Byron Nelson Championship - TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas- Irving, TX

  As per usual (I love using New York City phrases when I'm not from there. Let's see how many we can get in ...), with a relatively weak field this week, even the favorites are sleepers. Not for nothing, but the Byron Nelson used to be a pretty prestigious tournament, attended by all the prominent players. I assume this has something to do with the Fed-EX Playoffs at the end of the season; although it might simply be that the purses are so high nowadays, and the golfers don't have to play...
