PGA Busts of the Week: AT&T National - Congressional Country Club - Bethesda, MD

For as many solid rounds as there were with the favorable weather conditions this week, there were just some other tournament performances that were positively head scratching.  Some of them could possibly be contributed to old age and exhaustion, although they'd probably be upset that I'm making excuses for them if they read this.  Regardless, there were some really disappointing attempts this week, and unfortunately, that means another Busts of the Week article from me.

Jeff Quinney - 75-71 and enjoy your weekend, Jeff.  This was, to me, the most disappointing result this week, because this is a course; especially with the weather and how it was playing, that Quinney should have flat-out dominated; and really should have competed for a win, instead of totally missing the cut.  Sure, I can understand shooting a 75 (I actually WISH I could shoot a 75 ever, but I digress) in the first round putting you in a hole; but Quinney was certainly capable of putting up a 67 or something and at least making the cut.  Shockingly, the man who is 4th on Tour in Putting average and 9th on Tour in Putts Per Round can thank, yes, his putter for his missing the cut.  Quinney averaged 29.5 Putts Per Round, and 1.833 Putts Per GIR.  These numbers are WAY off his season average (28.14 and 1.737 respectively) and if his putter is failing him, then he can expect to continue what he did this week; miss the cut.

Corey Pavin - This might be where the older and tired thing I was mentioning kicks in; but I'm sure Pavin would vehemently deny it.  So, since that's the likely scenario, it's time to paint Pavin for what this week was; a bust.  He finished in a T-60th when he really should have at the very least carded a strong top-25.  This is a shorter course that demands accuracy off the tee, something that should be his strong suit.  The even sadder part was, Pavin's putter was excellent this week, finishing 1st in Putts Per Round and 7th in Putts Per GIR.  So what was the issue?  It was the one thing that is normally Pavin's strong suit, and really should have been a strong suit on the soft course; Driving Accuracy.  He finished 71st in Driving Distance, no surprise; but T-61st in Driving Distance?  Pavin can't even compete if he drives like that, and this week; he didn't.

Ryuji Imada - He entered this week 6th in the FedEx Cup standings, and was the highest ranked entrant to miss the cut.  He's taken a lot of time off of late, playing in just three tournaments since his win at the AT&T Classic on May 18th.  It's not as if he's been playing poorly, but he barely showed up this week, shooting 74-72 and missing the cut.  Imada is one of the better putters on Tour, but on the soft greens this week, as he averaged 29.5 Putts Per Round and 1.857 Putts Per GIR (he averages 28.22 Putts Per Round and has a 1.750 Putting Average on the season).  If he's going to get back to "semi-consistent start" status, he's really going to have to show something in the coming weeks; or I'm going to expect a precipitous drop in the FedEx standings over the next few weeks.
