NBA Busts of the Week - Week 23

Since the playoffs are right around the corner, you'd think that most players are stepping it up.  But this week, the players that made this list made the decision easy for me.  These guys are all relied on by their teammates, but I think they would have done better on the bench last week.  There are just two weeks left in fantasy regulation, so make sure you check out what these guys are doing to see if you really want them starting for you heading into fantasy playoffs.  This week's Busts of the Week are:

Jason Kidd, DAL:  Jason Kidd has struggled since his return to Dallas, and I'm not really sure why.  He's got a great team around him, he's playing for a good coach, and he's finally out of New Jersey.  Whatever the reason may be, Kidd bombed out bad last week.  He averaged just 2.7 points, seven assists, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals and two turnovers in 28.6 minutes.  Okay, we like seven assists, that's good.  But 2.7 points?  He's averaging 10.9 points on the season, so what's the problem?  Sure he's passing the ball more to guys like Jason Terry, Josh Howard and Dirk Nowitski who are able to score baskets just as easily as he can.  But it's not what we're used to seeing from him.  Plus, his minutes are down which will kill your numbers any day.  Dallas lost to the Lakers and Celtics last week, and this week they face the Spurs, Clippers and Nuggets.  You never want to leave Jason Kidd on your bench, but don't be surprised if he puts up similar numbers this week.

Emeka Okafor, CHA:  Did the return of Gerald Wallace hurt Okafor?  Or did he just have a bad week?  If you look at his numbers since Wallace's return, last week was the worst for Okafor, so it's safe to say that he had a bad week.  Really bad.  He averaged just 6.7 points, zero assists, seven rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.7 turnovers in 26.3 minutes.  Emeka is averaging 13.3 points and 10.9 rebounds on the season, so last week was pretty bad for him.  Charlotte faces the Jazz, Lakers, SuperSonics and Trail Blazers this week in a four-game road trip.  Look for Emeka to step it back up and play like normal as the Bobcats face a tough road swing.  I would never recommend that you bench Okafor because he has the potential to do so much.  The problem is that he doesn't always tap into that potential, leaving fantasy owners frustrated and unsure of what to do.  Keep him in there, and keep your fingers crossed that he does what he does best.

Ben Wallace, CLE:  I still have a hard time putting "Cleveland" instead of "Chicago" after Wallace's name.  It just seems weird.  Anyway, Ben Wallace has had a dismal season at best.  Everyone thought that once he got out of Chicago that he would start playing better, and he did for awhile.  But now it seems that he has gone back to his old ways.  Maybe he doesn't like playing PF or maybe his back is getting to be too much, I know he didn't travel with Cleveland today to Milwaukee.  Whatever Ben's problem is, he needs to fix it, and fast for fantasy GM's.  Last week he averaged 2.3 points, one assist, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks in 25.8 minutes.  All of his stats are down, and he sat out a game (not included in the previous numbers), which kills all fantasy owners.  We groan when a player gets injured in the middle of the week, and seeing any player miss time can kill you.  Knowing that Wallace did not travel with the team and the Cavs don't play again until Wednesday, it's safe to leave him in your lineup unless you have a better option.  Cleveland only has two games this week (New Orleans and Detroit), so he should be okay.

Morris Peterson, NOH:  The Hornets are one of the top teams in the West, currently second to the Lakers in the standings, although the West is not even close to decided.  The 2 spot has been a tough one for the Hornets all season, between Mo Pete and Jannero Pargo's inconsistencies.  Last week was a week that the Hornets didn't get much out of either of them, but Mo had it worse.  He averaged just 2.7 points, zero assists, 3.3 rebounds and 0.7 turnovers in 21.3 minutes.  His season averages aren't that great either (8.2 points and one assist), but last week was just bad.  He's only owned in 11.5% of leagues, and my suggestion is that you drop him or bench him in favor of a better option.  He just isn't going to give you much of anything anymore.

That's it for this week; make sure you come back next week to check out who else bombed out!
