Because of all the recent trades and the All-Star break,
this is going to be more of a DROP HIM NOW update. No one involved in the
recent flurry of trades has had time to get acclimated to his new team, and
many guys are playing their best basketball after a week off. I'm not ready to
judge who should be traded among those players yet, but there are several
players who should be dropped from all teams:
Yao Ming, HOU: Ming is out for the season with a stress fracture in his
foot. I'm going to get my ass kicked this week because I'm losing him (although
right now I am still winning, keep your fingers crossed!) and I have to go out
and find someone else to take his place. Until he got hurt, Yao averaged 22
points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and two blocks per game. It kills me knowing
that I have to drop him, but hey, that's part of the game. It's uncertain
whether Ming will have a cast put on his foot or if he will have surgery to
have screws put in, but either way it's about a four month recovery period.
Ouch. If you're in a keeper league, then save him for next season because he
"should" be playing in the Olympics this summer, which means he'll be
back on track next year. If you're like me, and not in a keeper league, it's
time to start shopping for a replacement.
Elton Brand, LAC: Brand ruptured his Achilles back in August and had to
have surgery to fix it. He has yet to return to contact drills, although he was
allowed to do non-contact drills starting in mid-February. He says that he
hopes to return to contact drills in 1-2 weeks and return to the court shortly
after that. However, LA Clippers trainer Jasen Powell said that even if Brand
returns this season, he'll be restricted to 15-20 minutes per game. The Clippers
are out of the playoff run for the season, so it's likely that management will
not allow Brand to play as many minutes as he is used to anyway because they
want their franchise player for next season. Clippers team officials will have
the final decision, so even Brand doesn't know that he'll be back this season.
If he does return, he's a few weeks away from doing so and his stats will not
be what they were pre-injury. It's time to let Brand go this season and hope
that he's back to normal next year.
Daniel Gibson, CLE: On February 22nd, Gibson sprained his left ankle
when diving for a loose ball against Pacers guard Travis Diener. It was the
second quarter of the game, and he had to be helped off the court by his
teammates. Gibson had a small amount of fantasy value before he got injured,
but now he has practically none. He's the backup shooting guard for Cleveland,
and with this injury, he could be out for the remainder of the regular season.
Prior to his injury, Gibson was starting to step up his play. He averaged 11.5
points, 2.5 assists, 2.4 rebounds and nearly one steal per game this season.
He's only owned in 30% of fantasy leagues because he doesn't give you a whole
lot on a consistent basis.. Given this injury, it's probably a good time to
drop him in favor of a healthy guard.
That's it for this week; tune back in next week to see where you can get the
most bang for your buck. In the meantime, find yourself some healthy
replacements for these injured players!
