MLB Top Weekly Performances - Third Basemen

This week might mark the anointing of a new super star, one whom fantasy owners waited and waited for since the beginning of the season to produce big numbers. At least one thing is for certain, though: pitchers could not get the top third basemen out, as the top three hit well above .400 for the week (a fourth, Akinori Iwamura, hit .400 on the dot). Still, this week was all about the gold-medal winner:

Gold

Evan Longoria (Tampa Bay Rays):  One of these days, Longoria will make more headlines than the female Hollywood star with whom he shares an absurdly similar name. Last week, Longoria was well on his way to doing so. In a week in which he dominated opposing pitchers, Longoria hit .433 with three HR, 10 RBI, seven runs scored, and he added a stolen base. Longoria started off slowly, which is not atypical of rookies, but patient owners are now starting to reap the rewards, as he boosted his season totals to .270, 15 HR, 47 RBI, and 41 R. It is clear now that Longoria has much more than keeper-league value; he has real fantasy value now.

Silver

David Wright (New York Mets):  Another young third baseman, Wright is no stranger to this list. The perennial MVP candidate hit .429 with three HR and eight RBI, in addition to scoring four runs. Wright continues to be simply a consistent hitter as he seeks another .300, 30-homer, 110-RBI season. Although his SB numbers are down this year (only eight so far, compared to 34 last year), Wright has embraced his role as run-producer, as he is actually on pace for 130 RBI now.

Bronze

Mike Lowell (Boston Red Sox):  After Lowell's early-season injury, he kind of fell off the fantasy baseball radar. Lowell, of course, had a big 2007 season, prompting many owners to draft him higher than expected this year. The early injury may have discouraged them, but he has been a steady producer since coming back. After a blazing week in which he hit .478 with a homer, seven RBI, and six runs scored, Lowell's season numbers are at .296/12/46 with 37 runs scored, making him one of the more underrated fantasy baseball stars at the moment.
