The three top relief pitchers this week should come as no surprise to
everyone. Minnesota, Boston and the Yankees definitely had some good games last
week. How do you know that? That's because the top relief performances came
from Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelborn and Mariano Rivera.
Gold
Joe Nathan (Minnesota Twins): What more could you ask for in a relief
pitcher? Joe threw four innings last week, closed each game and earned the four
saves. He only gave up two hits the entire time while striking out five and
having an ERA of 0.00 and WHIP of 0.50. That brings his season total to 22
saves, 37 strike outs and an ERA of 1.37.Nathan looks like his is having his
fifth straight great season.
Silver
Jonathan Papelbon (Boston Red Sox):
Papelbon blow a save last week, but he
also closed three games for the Sox. He threw 3.2 innings, struck out six
batters, while only giving up on hit and two walks. He had a weekly ERA of 2.45
and WHIP of 0.82 brining his season ERA to 2.00 and WHIP to 0.86. He has blown
a few saves but he's still pitching better then a lot of other relief pitchers.
Bronze
Mariano Rivera (New York Yankees):
Mo being on the top weekly performing
list shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Rivera is zoned in now and pitching
like he always has and will. Mariano only came into two games and pitched 2.1
innings but he earned the save both times while giving up two hits and striking
out three. He kept his ERA under 1.00 again both games making that 34 games
straight and having a season ERA of 0.74.
