Apparently this is the week of the backup catcher. Each catcher listed below
is either a backup catcher, or they are relegated to splitting duty for a
decent amount of time. However, this week they all performed admirably. These
catchers have played well, hoping to gain more playing time. They did better
than some of the elite catchers in the league. On top of that they also
performed well while sharing catching duty with others. This was quite a good
week for backup catchers; though don't expect it to last long. Credit should be
given where it is due. These three catchers deserve praise.
Gold
1.) Chris Iannetta (Catcher - Colorado Rockies) - Iannetta is the
backup catcher in Colorado, but he's playing better than the starter. He had
five straight starts, but the Rockies are still planning on using him behind
Yorvit Torrealba. That doesn't seem very smart, especially considering the week
Iannetta has had. He's been playing very solid and has earned more playing
time. His stat line for the week is as follows: 7/18, 3 runs, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 0
SB, and .389 AVG. Those are terrific stats, but it seems like Iannetta will
only get to play around 40 or so percent of the games. If he keeps putting up
numbers like this then there's a good chance he'll get the majority of playing
time. He's definitely earned it.
Silver
2.) Paul Bako (Catcher - Cincinnati Reds) - Don't look now but Bako
has made a fantasy contribution again this week. He is not exactly a fantasy
stud, but he has put up solid numbers again. He's on the verge of having a
career year. He's already had a fantasy career year because his value has never
been higher. His numbers for the week are as follows: 7/17, 3 runs, 2 HR, 4
RBI, 0 SB, and .412 AVG. It seemed like Bako was going to be the backup in
Cincinnati, but it seems like he's the top dog again, at least for now.
Bronze
3.) Matt Treanor (Catcher - Florida Marlins) - Who would have thought
Matt Treanor would ever be considered a top catcher in the majors? He isn't
exactly a top catcher, but he gets the bronze medal this week. He had a career
high three-RBI this week and has been very impressive in his last few games.
His numbers for the week are as follows: 6/16, 3 runs, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB,
and .375 AVG. He isn't exactly a threat to do this every week, but he was
very good this week and deserves recognition for his play.
