First basemen have always been a big component of fantasy
baseball. They are the classic homerun hitters who hit the long ball and drive
in tons of runs. However, this week the fantasy first basemen went above and
beyond the call of duty. They were playing on an insanely high level. Kevin
Youkilis lead the way with a stellar May and has more RBI this week than some
players have all season long. Each player listed below went above and beyond
and have helped numerous fantasy teams out. They show no signs of slowing down
either, which sounds kind of scary if you think about it.
Gold
1.) Kevin Youkilis (1B/3B - Boston Red Sox) - It seems Youkilis is Mr. May. He seems to have a habit of
coming alive in May, having fantastic numbers during said month. This year is
no different and Youkilis lead all players in homeruns and RBI during the
month. The scariest part of this is that the month isn't even close to being
over yet, meaning Youkilis has time to put up even bigger numbers. His numbers
this week are as follows: 13/31, 9 runs, 6 HR, 13 RBI, 1 SB, and .419 AVG.
Those are out of this world numbers and, personal feelings for Youkilis aside,
he's a tremendous force this week.
Silver
2.) Lance Berkman (1B/RF - Houston Astros) - If it wasn't for Youkilis' hot week then Berkman would
have taken the honors for best first baseman. However, overall, Berkman's
numbers are simply outstanding. He is hitting for power and hitting for
average. Not just a simple .300-.400 average; he is hitting for an insanely
high amount, as his following stats will show: 18/23, 11 runs, 3 HR, 8 RBI,
2 SB, and .783 AVG. That isn't a typo; he really is hitting nearly .800 for
the week. He is playing at an astronomically high level and doesn't show any
signs of slowing down. If you own him you better count your blessings for being
so lucky.
Bronze
3.) Joey Votto (1B/LF - Cincinnati Reds) - Votto hasn't exactly been as consistent as Youkilis or
Berkman, but he got the job done none-the-less. He did the majority of his
damage in a single game, but he made sure it was one hell of a game. He hit not
one, not two, but three homers and was a human highlight reel this week. He is
a very talented young player and this week should be an eye-opener for
everyone. His numbers for the week are as follows: 6/18, 5 runs, 3 HR, 6
RBI, 1 SB, and .333 AVG. He is more than capable of putting up good
numbers. Owners in keeper leagues should be particularly aware of how valuable
this player is.
