This week's best aren't from your conventional wisdom
"top guys" (save for one). One has bounced around between the
minors and the DL since 2005, and the other seems to be showing his best form
since 2003. Let's get to it.
Gold
Cliff Lee - Cleveland Indians - It's been a great story for Lee so far this season.
Lee was 18-5 with a 3.79 ERA in 2005, but has struggled since. He shuffled
among the disabled list, the minors and the Indians rotation last season, never
finding his groove. This year however, he really seems to be returning to that
2005 form, and weeks like this one will only help his cause. Here's what
he did: 2 W, 0 L in 16.0 IP with 16 K's, an ERA of 0.56 and a WHIP of a
disgusting 0.31.
Silver
Ervin Santana - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Orange
County, California, USA, North America, Earth - The youngster has come up huge for the Angels to this point
in the season. So much so, that the usually stoic Mike Scioscia was
effusive in his praise for his young ace. After the game Saturday,
Scioscia told the AP; "He was really loaded and just had great life on
that fastball -- with command. I think he's shown that his stuff can play up
here in the big leagues in a big way." That's big praise coming from
Scioscia. Here's what Santana did this past week: 2 W, 0 L, 15.0 IP, 14
K, an ERA of 2.40, and a WHIP of 0.73.
Bronze
Javier Vasquez - Chicago White Sox - Javier Vasquez was once in the same rotation with Pedro
Martinez in Montreal. He persevered through his time there, and became
one of the most sought-after commodities in the game. He was signed by
the Yankees in 2004, and after a poor season, seemed to lose confidence.
He eventually ended up in Chicago, and last year had his 15-8 year. Not
much was expected from him this year. He was supposed to be a back of the
rotation guy; but in reality, Vasquez seems to have regained his form from five
years ago; helping the White Sox to their hot start. Vasquez' week: 2
W's, 0 L's, 13.1 IP, 13 K's, an ERA of 1.35 and a WHIP of 0.90.
