Buy! Sell! High! Low! What are the Dukes up to? (A
reference to Trading Places, for those who were wondering, not to Zach and
Elijah). Some star players see their stock plummet, but I will say this
until August: it's still early.
Bulls
Evan Longoria - 3B - (Tampa
Bay Rays):
Those who drafted him in anticipation of seeing results in May or June, you
were rewarded early. Longoria got the call thanks to Willy Aybar, and he
has made himself immediately comfortable. Longoria has reached base in
his first four major league games, hit .333, and already cracked his first HR
while hitting fifth in the Rays' lineup. Longoria looks comfortable
already, and if he continues to play well, it will be impossible for the Rays
to send him back down.
Kevin Youkilis - 1B/3B - (Boston
Red Sox): Youkilis is simply steady, but with Mike Lowell currently
on the shelf, the Red Sox are asking Youkilis to play more of a run-producing
role in the fifth spot of the lineup. He has responded, ranking among the
league leaders with 11 RBI while also scoring 11 R. Hitting .385 with a
.435 OBP certainly helps, but Yoooouuukkkk has also hit six doubles, two
triples, and a homer. As long as Lowell's
injured, Youkilis is a must-start, and his versatility on defense makes him a
nice backup at those positions, or even a full-time starter that won't hurt you
at 3B.
Rafael Betancourt - RP - (Cleveland
Indians): Finally! Joe Borowski has been pitching through
injury, and I would bet he did so because he did not want to lose his job to
Betancourt. Well, Borowski did not pitch well at all, he was placed on
the DL, and now Betancourt gets a chance to close. If things go well,
look for Betancourt to keep the job, since Cleveland
fans have been clamoring for this moment for a long time.
Runners-up Bulls: Zack Greinke - SP - (Kansas
City Royals); Manny Acosta - RP - (Atlanta
Braves) [note that Rafael Soriano and Peter Moylan are both injured].
Bears
Eric Bedard - SP - (Seattle
Mariners): There is no doubt that, when healthy, Bedard is one of the
best pitchers in the game, and his high strikeout totals make him an
almost-elite pitcher. The hangup? His injury history.
Although his most recent injury is not arm-related, one has to be concerned
about his fragility. This injury is not one to make owners look to trade
him, but he needs to be watched carefully for any signs of discomfort anywhere.
David Ortiz - 1B/DH - (Boston
Red Sox): Ortiz's power numbers were down last year because of knee
problems, and in the first month of the season, it does not appear that the
problems have resolved. Ortiz simply looks awful at the plate, and the
numbers he has produced are even worse (.113 AVG, 1 HR, 3 RBI). Terry
Francona has been saying that Ortiz needs a mental break, but it is looking
more and more like Ortiz might need a physical break.
Prince Fielder - 1B - (Milwaukee
Brewers): Is it the vegetarian diet? Fielder revealed in the
offseason that he became a vegetarian and now shuns all meat. The results
so far? Zero HR and six RBI. That is not to say that his diet
alone, or at all, is causing his lack of production, but Fielder has been a
huge bust so far, especially since he was taken in the very high rounds of
fantasy drafts this year. It is safe to say that Fielder won't match his
home run total of last year, but he needs to get on a hot streak soon if he
wants to remain one of the top five or eight 1B in fantasy leagues.
Runners-up Bears: Jose Valverde - RP - (Houston
Astros); Ubaldo Jimenez - SP - (Colorado
Rockies)
