The first week of the season did not suffer from any shortage of interesting fantasy news. Right away, owners are already looking for that out-of-nowhere sleeper or fretting over whether their high draft pick will pick up the pace as the season wears on. Here are several players to consider.
Bulls
Victor Martinez - C - (Cleveland Indians): It is never good news when you hear that one of your players has a hamstring injury. It is even worse when it is your high-priced catcher, since he has to crouch behind the plate for so long on that tender hammy. As a result, news of Martinez's injury last week had to be a major concern for his owners, but he did not go on the DL, and he returned to action behind the plate on Monday, going 2-4 with a double and RBI. The fact that the Indians put him behind the plate, and not at 1B or DH, is an excellent sign that he is recovered, so look for Martinez to put up the big numbers expected of him.
Xavier Nady - OF - (Pittsburgh Pirates): When you are a player who is on waiver wires in as many leagues as not, and you lead the league in RBI the first week of the season, you are guaranteed to be a bull. Nady has always been a relatively solid player who plays on underwhelming offenses, so he suffers in key stats such as R and RBI. His fast start to the season makes him appealing if he is on the waiver wire, especially if you have an injured starter. Look for Nady to continue to play well for another short while, and feel confident that he can be a temporary fix for your depleted roster.
George Sherrill - RP - (Baltimore Orioles): Baltimore is perhaps the hottest team in the majors, and Sherrill is quite possibly the hottest closer. There were a lot of question marks surrounding Sherrill before the season, since Baltimore was expected to be a terrible team this year and Sherrill was a first-time closer. Both defied expectations in the first week, as Baltimore kept winning and Sherrill chalked up four saves.
Runners-up Bulls: Mark Reynolds - 3B - (Arizona Diamondbacks); Billy Butler - DH - (Kansas City Royals) [note on Reynolds: though he is off to a hot start, beware his status once Chad Tracy returns to the lineup]
Bears
Francisco Rodriguez - RP - (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim): K-Rod was not immune to the struggles of closers at the beginning of the season. He suffered an ankle injury (two, actually, with injuries to both ankles) in a poor outing on Monday, and there is little word as to the extent of his injury. K-Rod relies a lot on his legs, and even if one ankle heals quickly, he still has to worry about the other ankle. No word yet as to whether he will land on the DL, but the Angels have two legitimate backup closers in Scot Shields and Justin Speier, so they do not have a need to rush him back. Keep him on your bench for now, and prepare to DL him if indeed it happens.
C.C. Sabathia - SP - (Cleveland Indians): Sabathia was one of the top three starting pitchers taken in many drafts, and certainly one of the top five. However, his control has been way off at the beginning of the season, and that has played a big role in his 7.59 ERA. Last year, Sabathia walked only 37 batters in 241 innings, but he has already walked seven batters this year in only 10.2 IP, a very alarming sign. Sabathia is too young and too good to keep this up, but you might want to consider leaving him on your bench until he shows that he has straightened out his control issues.
Jorge Posada - C - (New York Yankees): Posada has been remarkably durable throughout his career, never once landing on the DL. That is an amazing feat for a full-time catcher, especially one who plays every October, but that streak may come to an end. Posada has been complaining of a shoulder injury, and though he tried to come back this week after taking a few days off, the injury has apparently returned. Even if Posada were not to come close to his amazing 2007 season, he is still one of the top three offensive catchers in baseball, so this injury hits hard to his owners. Be prepared to DL him, and pick up a backup catcher (if you don't have one) in the process.
Runners-up Bears: Alfonso Soriano - OF - (Chicago Cubs); Julio Lugo - SS - (Boston Red Sox)
