This week's batch of left fielders put up some great numbers. They hit
homeruns and drove in runs, while also hitting for average. The most surprising
performer was Pat Burrell, who seems to have regained his form from a few years
ago and is putting up great numbers this year. Left field isn't always
considered a premier position for fantasy baseball. There are usually a handful
of elite players; Carlos Lee is already amongst them, but Burrell & Matsui
could join that group if they can keep up this great start.
Gold
1.) Pat Burrell (LF - Philadelphia Phillies) - Burrell has been
dominant this week. He's hitting for power and average, and has not looked this
good in years. This week he had a field day against Bronson Arroyo of the Reds.
Who would have thought that Burrell would be off to a better start than Ryan
Howard? Needless to say, Burrell has looked great and could have a monster
year. His stat line for the week is as follows: 9/20, 4 runs, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 0
SB, .450 AVG. He has been an early surprise and has the ability to drive in
runs and keep his power numbers up. His average will almost certainly dip down,
but if it can hover near .300 then he could put up the best season of his
career. It is still very early in the season, but Burrell is off to a fantastic
start.
Silver
2.) Carlos Lee (LF - Houston Astros) - Lee is notorious for getting
off to hot starts. Surprise, surprise; Carlos Lee is off to another hot start.
He's hitting the ball and is also displaying his power. The Astros have a very
solid offensive corps., and Lee is in perfect position to put up a monster
amount of RBI's, as well as his fair share of homeruns. His numbers for the
week are as follows: 10/24, 4 runs, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, .345 AVG. It
wouldn't be a surprise for Lee to have another .300/30/115 type season,
especially if he can keep his hot streak alive.
Bronze
3.) Hideki Matsui (LF - New York Yankees) - It's a good thing that
fantasy baseball doesn't take poor defense into account with weekly scoring.
Matsui isn't exactly error prone, he simply just can't cover any ground. In the
first week he completely looked his age. He misplayed balls in the outfield, he
hit into double plays, and it seemed like he didn't have anything left. That
is, however, until this week. Matsui began making better contact, hit for
power, and the Yankees have been winning ever since his bat started heating up.
His numbers for the week are as follows: 9/24, 2 runs, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB,
.375 AVG. Matsui had a very solid week, but it looks more impressive when
considering how appalling his first week was. If Matsui can stay healthy and
keep this pace up then he could hopefully stay a .290/25/100 kind of
outfielder.
