Pinch-hitting for Tommy D, number double zero, Phil Yoon, number double zero. It really is fun to take the risk and pick players off of
waivers every now and then. You never know when you'll wind up finding a
diamond in the rough. Picking up players off of waivers is a good (and cheap,
as in, doesn't cost you players or picks) way to find players that can have an
impact on a fantasy team. This installment of MLB Waiver Wire consists
of five players that are available in most leagues, and should give an added
boost to your team; especially if you need stats in a particular category.
Hopefully the listed players will help as the playoffs get closer.
Rocco Baldelli
Tampa Bay Rays - OF
Owned - 5.3%
Huh. Who knew Baldelli was ever going to play baseball again? After he was diagnosed with a mystery illness early in the year, it didn't look like Baldelli would play professional baseball again, let alone this season. One thing about Baldelli, though, is he has always been a gamer, and he has proven it with what may be the ultimate comeback. Not only is he playing, but he is playing like a man possessed. You might want to pick him up before the euphoria wears off.
Last Week: .455 (5/11) 0 HR, 3 RBI, 3 Runs Scored, 0 SB.
Shin-Soo Choo
Cleveland Indians - OF
Owned - 9.0%
All of a sudden, the Indians have found offense, and they found a lot of it in an unlikely source. Choo has been a revelation for the Indians so far, hitting .284 on the season and driving in 43 runs in only 236 ABs. Playing on a fairly regular basis now, Choo has given the Indians power, patience, and even a little speed. By batting him in the middle of the order, the Indians are also rewarding Choo and anyone who has picked him up off the wire.
Last Week: .579 (11/19) 3 HR, 7 RBI, 4 Runs Scored.
Billy Butler
Kansas City Royals - 1B
Owned - 11.3%
Butler certainly looks the part of a masher, and lately he has been playing the part. Butler got off to a truly disastrous start, but the Royals are going nowhere, so they could afford to see if Butler really has what it takes. Judging by the past week, he does. One of the more intriguing hitting prospects to come out of the minors, Butler needs to continue hitting the ball hard consistently if the Royals want to have any hope in the future.
Last Week: .476 (10/21) 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 Runs Scored.
Nick Blackburn
Minnesota Twins
- SP
Owned - 7.7%
One wonders what it is about Blackburn that keeps so many owners away from him. Is it the low strikeout total (less than half a batter per inning pitched)? Is it the 1.33 WHIP? Is it the relatively modest record (9-8)? Whatever it is, Blackburn has been able to keep his ERA pretty consistently under 4 all year, and his WHIP has always hovered around 1.35. Sure, he won't get you the strikeouts, but if you are looking for a fill-in starter, you can pretty much predict what Blackburn will give you game in and game out.
Last Start: 5.2 IP, 0 W, 0 L, 2 Ks, 3.18 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP
Manny Delcarmen
Boston Red Sox - RP
Owned - 0.4%
If your league values Holds, then Delcarmen might be a savvy pickup for you. Boston has been trying to figure out the back end of its bullpen before getting to Jonathan Papelbon, and they finally might have found their man in Delcarmen. He seems to have found his comfort zone in the bullpen, and that is translating into plenty of Ks and, hopefully soon, a lot of Holds.
Last Week: 4.1 IP, 0 W, 0 L, 5 Ks, 1 Hold, 0.00 ERA, and a
0.92 WHIP.
