MLB Top Weekly Performances - Starting Pitchers

Pitching wins championships, or so goes the old saying. This week that saying never looked more true because some pitchers are capable of putting up numbers so good that even if one pitcher faults on a team, the entire team’s numbers won’t suffer because of it. Dominance, that’s the best word to describe some of the pitchers this week. They went deep into the game, usually back-to-back times, they picked up wins, sometimes getting shutouts, and had extremely low ERAs and WHIPs. If pitching doesn’t win championships then I don’t know what does, because some of these numbers were beyond amazing. Hopefully they can keep it up and continue to help owner out. These three pitchers below deserve praise and recognition for putting up fantastic numbers.

Gold

Roy Oswalt (SP - Houston Astros) - Oswalt has been absolutely dominant as of late. It’s amazing how quickly a player can go from being horrible to being dominant in such a short amount of time. Earlier in the year Oswalt looked completely finished, and perhaps it was because of his hip that he wasn’t pitching well, but now he looks like a completely different pitcher. He’s getting his fastball back up there, his off-speed stuff looks good, and he’s looking as if nobody can hit any of pitches. Oswalt recently threw a one-hit shutout against the Rockies, at Coors field, and it honestly wasn’t much of a surprise because he’s been on fire for the last week or so. Hopefully he can keep it up when owners need it the most.

2 wins, 0 losses, 17.1 IP, 9 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.40 WHIP

Silver

CC Sabathia (SP - Milwaukee Brewers) - Sabathia didn’t get the call overturned that would have given him a no-hitter. Tough break, but it was the right call. Another right call was the Brewers trading for Sabathia. He’s been better than anyone could have imagined. Since getting him the team has gone 11-1 and Sabathia’s record has been 9-0 with an ERA of 1.42. Who would have thought that he’d be so good that some thought he could have won the NL Cy Young after being traded. Chances are that doesn’t happen, but he has been especially dominant since joining the NL. Sabathia didn’t get a win one of his outings this week, but he did put up a huge amount of strikeouts. He’s been amazing ever since joining the Brewers and hopefully it doesn’t stop.

1 win, 0 losses, 1 complete game, 1 shutout, 16 IP, 20 K, 0.56 ERA, 0.69 WHIP

Bronze

Derek Lowe (SP - Los Angeles Dodgers) - Congratulations Lowe. Aside from the addition of Manny Ramirez, the biggest reason for the resurgence of the Dodgers has been Derek Lowe. He’s been on fire and fantasy owners can’t be more pleased. He may not get many strikeouts, but that really doesn’t matter if he can get wins and have a low ERA and WHIP. He may be trying especially hard because he’s in a contract year, but Lowe has always shown the ability of putting up terrific numbers when they matter the most.

2 wins, 0 losses, 14 IP, 6 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.64 WHIP
