It seems that the centerfield position always has that one player who comes from nowhere and puts up great numbers, but then that player isn't seen again for a while. This week is a perfect example because that's most likely what's going to happy. Cody Ross surprised everyone this week with his, finally, consistent play. Grady Sizemore makes another appearance and it's beginning to be the norm for him. However, as stated above, the one player that makes this week's Top Centerfield Performances is Ryan Spilborghs, but he most likely won't make it in a while due to him being a temporary fill in for the injured Willy Tavares. It's always nice, and exciting, to see a player come out of nowhere and put on a show like Spilborghs did. Hopefully next week there will be even more centerfielders to write praise about because it's refreshing seeing newer players step up and performing well.
Gold
Cody Ross (LF/CF/RF - Florida Marlins) - Ross really put on a show this week. He has hit well over .500 for the month, which shows how consistent he's been lately, and he's also been driving in runs left and right. He did his part in giving the Marlins their leads the past few games. However, the bullpen wasn't able to keep the lead. If they had a competent pen then what Ross did alone would have been able to keep them on top, because Ross has had such a fantastic week. His power numbers aren't the same as they were in May, when he hit 10 homeruns, but he's showing tremendous gap power. He's putting the bat on the ball and putting it where the defense isn't. That's the important part. He's been absolutely spectacular this week and his numbers are way up top for centerfielders.
15/31, 7 runs, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 0 SB, .484 AVG
Silver
Grady Sizemore (CF - Cleveland Indians) - Grady continues to prove that he's one of the best centerfielders in the league. He's young and athletic, not to mention he's finally hitting the ball better. His average dipped a little lower this week, but he is still extremely valuable. His main value comes from scoring runs, hitting homeruns, and stealing bases. He did a little of everything this week. In fact, Grady Sizemore now leads the AL in homeruns. Who would have thought that Sizemore would have more homeruns than A-Rod, Manny Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero, Justin Morneau, etc.? He is really coming into his own, but he could definitely help owners out more by having a higher average. Either way I don't think owners will complain all that much as long as he drives in runs and steals bases. He's an elite centerfielder and his numbers support that statement.
7/25, 6 runs, 4 HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB, .280 AVG
Bronze
Ryan Spilborghs (LF/CF/RF - Colorado Rockies) - Spilborghs is in a pretty rough position. Willy Taveras has a sore left quad, thus Spilborghs has gotten the start in centerfield. He didn't do that much, unless you count getting a game winning hit in the bottom of the 11th against the Marlins, or hitting two homers in an 18-17 win against the Marlins. He's been absolutely fantastic since taking over for Taveras. He's shown some power, drove in some runs, scored some runs, and even stole a base. It seems that most of his hits came when the Rockies needed him the most. He brings another dimension to the centerfield position for the Rockies. Taveras has terrific speed that nobody on that team can match, but Spilborghs has decent speed, but he's also got some power and the ability to hit the ball that Taveras lacks. Taveras will most likely go back to starting centerfield, but Spilborghs has definitely earned the chance to get some more playing time. He's been outstanding this week.
