Once again the catching position is the weak link for the week. It’s a very physically demanding position, hence players tend to get tired and under perform. There are a handful of top fantasy catchers in this league and, luckily for owners, two of them are listed in this article. However, just because they’re here doesn’t mean that they were necessarily good. In fact, they were far from great. It’s one thing to be good, but it’s another to be great. These players put up solid numbers, but they weren’t the numbers that they were capable of putting up. However, these three players still deserve recognition for putting up numbers that were good for their position for the week.
Gold
Russell Martin (C/3B - Los Angeles Dodgers) - Martin may not have been spectacular this week, but he was good enough. He put up some solid numbers this week, but his power numbers have still been a bit down. The biggest concern over him this week would be the concern of his back. He’s been having back spasms, but seems like he was able to play well enough through them. His numbers weren’t the best this week, but catchers had an extremely difficult week and Martin outshined everyone else. He’s one of the most talented overall catchers, especially offensively, but he’s been a bit of a disappointment this week. Hopefully he’ll rebound all right and play better down the stretch because fantasy owners need him now more than ever.

Silver
Yadier Molina (C - St. Louis Cardinals) - Molina had been extremely solid as of late. He’s had some very nice stretches where he’d have over a 10 game hit streak, then he’d lose it, and start another one. Hopefully he’s on his way to another one because owners could use that more than ever right now. Molina has had a career year so far. His offense was never expected to be much at all, but it’s been better than expected this season, and has a chance to be even better next year thanks to potential. His defense has been as good as ever and he’s slowly beginning to look like a competent fantasy catcher. His main problem as of now is staying healthy, but the potential is there.
5/22, 3 runs, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, .227 AVG
Bronze
Joe Mauer (C - Minnesota Twins) - Mauer has had a quiet week. His overall numbers are pretty solid, but he has room for lots of improvement. His power numbers have been a tease all season long. He’ll go stretches where he shows no homerun power, then he’ll all of a sudden hit four. Fantasy owners need more consistency and he just hasn’t done that, even when it comes to average. He won the batting title not too long ago, but this year he’s been streaky and inconsistent. Luckily he’s surrounded by talent like Justin Morneau who will drive him in when he gets on base. If Mauer could develop more consistent power than he’d really be worthy of being the number one catcher taken. As of now he’s overrated, at least in my book, if someone were to call him the best catcher.
