MLB Top Weekly Performances - Second Basemen

The second base position was a bit odd this week. There was, of course, Dustin Pedroia putting up terrific numbers. However, the other two were pretty much surprises. Kelly Johnson has been pretty consistent putting up numbers, when healthy, this year. Asdrubal Cabrera isn’t exactly the first name that comes to mind when you think of fantasy friendly second baseman. He did help owners none-the-less and deserves recognition. These three players put up numbers better than everyone else and deserve praise for doing so. This is the most important time on the fantasy calendar and obviously some of the bigger named players didn’t do what they were expected to do.

Gold

Dustin Pedroia (2B - Boston Red Sox) - Pedroia continues to defy the odds and keeps hitting like it’s going out of style. He now took over as the AL Batting leader, but lost his nine game hit streak. During the streak his average was an insane .579. Pedroia doesn’t seem like he’d be worthy of an MVP award since he’s done most of his damage recently, but it’s getting harder and harder to deny the fact that he’s really playing some dominant baseball. His numbers are incredible, it seems like he helps owners out game after game, and he’s the biggest reason for the Red Sox hanging near the top of the AL East and AL Wild Card. I still don’t think Pedroia can keep it up, but I also predicted that at this time last week he would have faltered and it seemed he only got better.

10/24, 5 runs, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 SB, .417 AVG

Silver

Kelly Johnson (2B - Atlanta Braves) - Johnson has been a huge surprise this year. If he hadn’t gotten hurt his numbers would have been even better. His numbers may not have matched up to how they did last year, but his hits seem to be more important. It seems like he always comes up in a clutch situation. He did this week and he smacked a huge double with men on base. However, the ball bounced over the fence. Had it stayed in play then the winning run would have scored, but instead it wound up going to extra innings where they lost. Johnson isn’t the best defender, and he may not have the best offensive numbers, but he’s a very good player on a not so good team. He always seems to get his chances so keep using him and hope he’ll get more chances.

14/30, 6 runs, 0 HR, 10 RBI, 0 SB, .467 AVG

Bronze

Asdrubal Cabrera (2B - Cleveland Indians) - Cabrera is better known for his glove than his bat, but this week he regained a bit of fantasy value and helped out some of those in deeper leagues. He really didn’t hit for much power, but he did hit, and that’s still very valuable in itself. He nearly racked up double digit hits, and he also collected a few RBI. His run production could be a bit better, but the Indians as a team seem to have had problems driving in runs all year round. Don’t expect Cabrera to keep putting up fantasy friendly numbers. After all, he is better known for his glove than his bat.

9/17, 3 runs, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 0 SB, .529 AVG
