MLB Stock Market - May 7th Edition

A lot of youngsters were given golden opportunities to stake their claim to a starting position at the beginning of the season.  Some stumbled, but some of them are taking advantage of that opportunity in a big way.  Some of them make our bulls-and-bears list for the week:

Bulls

Matt Kemp - OF - (Los Angeles Dodgers):  Kemp is caught in the quagmire that is what I call the Juan-Pierre Mess, but he did his best to get out of that conundrum with a huge week.  Kemp hit .414 with 11 RBIs over the last seven days while also swiping seven bases, and was a big reason why the Dodgers were undefeated last week.  Pierre had a good week too, but when Kemp out-steals Pierre while also beating him in the expected categories, he simply has to be the one in the starting lineup every day.

David Ortiz - 1B/UTIL - (Boston Red Sox):  Ortiz was sitting on some fantasy benches because of his slow start, but Big Papi is starting to come around.  In the last seven days, he has been on a tear, hitting .440 with three homers, seven RBI, and an .880 SLG.  His season numbers are still way down, but his production over the last week-and-a-half are encouraging signs.  Apparently, his knee is still bothering him, but maybe he has learned to adjust to the pain.

Geovany Soto - C - (Chicago Cubs):  Soto is so hot, he might actually have boosted himself above Victor Martinez as the best fantasy catcher in baseball, a feat many would have thought impossible by any catcher at the beginning of the season.  Soto is currently hitting .349 with six homers and 24 RBI, to go along with a .442 OBP and .651 SLG.  Soto looks like he is the real deal, and his presence in the Cubs lineup (and fantasy lineups) has reaped surprising and most welcome benefits.

Runners-up Bulls:  Gavin Floyd - SP - (Chicago Cubs); Ervin Santana - SP - (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim).

Bears

Eric Gagne - RP - (Milwaukee Brewers):  A frequent guest in the "Bears" section, Gagne is back again because of rumors that he is in danger of losing the closer role.  The Brewers have denied those rumors and have maintained that Gagne is still their closer, but it is hard to argue with a 6.14 ERA and five blown saves, especially when Milwaukee believes it has a chance at the division.  Gagne is on thin ice despite his contract, and any more blown saves could be his last opportunity for the considerable future.

Carlos Beltran - OF - (New York Mets):  Beltran has struggled all season, and things don't seem to be getting much better.  His .369 OBP, despite a .219 AVG, suggests that perhaps teams are pitching around him, but .219 with two homers, 13 RBI, .390 SLG, and only two stolen bases is simply unacceptable from your expensive CF.  Usually speed helps a slumping player stay in a fantasy lineup, but right now, there is no reason to start Beltran until he starts either running more or hitting again.

Brian Bannister - SP - (Kansas City Royals):  Bannister started off the year very strong, just like his team, but he has been fading quickly of late, just like his team.  In the last 14 days, Bannister is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA, also giving up 24 hits in 16.1 innings.  Bannister has never had dominating stuff, so he needs to be crafty, but of late opposing hitters are figuring him out.  Playing for a bad team does not help, either.

Runners-up Bears: Ryan Howard - 1B - (Philadelphia Phillies); Robinson Cano - 2B - (New York Yankees)
